Biography

Hossein Ali Montazeri was a crucial political and religious actor in post-revolutionary Iran. Initially he was a close ally of Ayatollah Khomeini and contributed significantly to the drafting of the new Islamic republic's constitution. Montazeri was positioned to be Khomeini's successor but diverged from the leadership due to his advocacy for more democratic freedoms and criticisms of the regime's human rights record.
