Biography
Najib Mahfuz was an Egyptian novelist credited with modernizing Arabic literature. He authored over 30 novels, over 350 short stories, dozens of movie scripts, and five plays over his career. His narratives, deeply embedded in the social fabric of Egyptian urban life, explore themes of existentialism, politics, and social injustice. His most famous trilogy, consisting of 'Bayn al-Qasrayn', 'Qasr al-Shawq', and 'Al-Sukkariyya', offers a vivid depiction of Egyptian society from the First World War until the 1950s. His work earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988.
