Biography
Rifa'a al-Tahtawi was an Egyptian scholar, writer, and translator who played a pivotal role in the intellectual renaissance of the 19th century in Egypt. He was deeply influenced by his studies in Paris, which led him to advocate for educational reforms, the adoption of modern scientific knowledge alongside traditional Islamic sciences, and the promotion of a rational approach to religion. Al-Tahtawi's contributions include numerous translations of important European works into Arabic, original writings on sociology, history, and linguistics, and a comprehensive encyclopedia on ethics and political science.
